Will listening to the Shins truly change your life, as Natalie Portmans character in Garden State promised? Realistically speaking, probably not. But it can make your world a good deal more beautiful, at least sonically. Sneaking quietly onto the indie-rock scene with their 2001 Sub Pop debut, Oh, Inverted World, the Albuquerque-formed, Portland-based Shins came on like the second coming of 60s art-poppers the Zombies never even close to being the biggest band of the British invasion, but arguably one of the best. 2003s Chutes Too Narrow was even stronger, overflowing with precocious ambition and dizzyingly catchy melodies. The Shins are currently working on their eagerly awaited third album, which could very well officially catapult them from not-so-best-kept-secret to Coldplay-level superstardom.
