A Hassidic Jew mixing rap, rock and reggae? As strange as it may seem on paper, the fusion wrought by Matisyahu (nee Matthew Miller) has captured the imagination of music fans and made its maker something of a media darling. With his 2004 debut, Shake Off the Dust Arise, he proved that his marriage of Jamaican dancehall rhythms and traditional Judaic values was anything but a joke, and the following years Live at Stubbs recorded here in Austin at one of the citys premier venues showcased his undeniable stage presence and human beat-box skills. The albums King Without A Crown hit the pop Top 30 and powered the CD to similar heights on the album charts. Matisyahus major-label studio debut, Youth, produced by Bill Laswell, soared all the way into the Top 5. In his first Austin City Limits Music Festival show, this canny and creative artist will bless the crowd with one of contemporary musics coolest new wrinkles.
