The Flaming Lips

Without question the most adventurous band to ever rock 90210s Peach Pit, the Flaming Lips have never burned brighter than the present. The Oklahoma bands biggest radio hit to date still may be 1994s She Dont Use Jelly, but more recent projects like 1999s The Soft Bulletin and 2002s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots not to mention 1997s ultra-experimental, play-all-four-discs-at-once-please Zaireeka have secured the Lips tenure as modern rocks most lovably out-there misfits. If recent history has taught us anything, the bands brand new At War with the Mystics described by frontman Wayne Coyne to Rolling Stone as sounding like Black Sabbath got Herbie Hancock to record with them, and they asked Syd Barrett to write something he would say at a funeral will inevitably finish high on many a critics year-end best albums list. As for what to expect from the Lips when they show up for their debut Austin City Limits Music Festival appearance, well, after Coyne pulled that famous human hamster ball stunt a ways back at Californias Coachella gathering, its anyones guess. But chances are, whatever surprises they pull out of their hat this year are sure to leave a lasting impression.
