Ever since the first time he got to rock out with Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughans legendary Double Trouble rhythm section on Austin City Limits a few years back, John Mayers penchant for the blues has been one of the worst-kept secrets in popular music. Sure, he sold his first several million records on the strength of such mellow tunes as Your Body is a Wonderland (from his 2001 debut, Room for Squares) and Daughters (from 2003s Heavier Things), but the Grammy-winning songwriters formidable guitar chops suggest that hes not so much his own generations James Taylor as he is a latter-day Eric Clapton in the making. Last year, he teamed with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino to strut his bluesier side with the John Mayer Trio, which issued the blistering live album, Try! Hell be touring solo again in support of his forthcoming Continuum album by the time the ACL Festival rolls around, but rest-assured this self-professed SRV-fanatic wont be shy with the guitar heroics when he takes the stage at Zilker Park.
