Seattle-based songwriter Rocky Votolato has earned comparisons to Paul Simon and early Elliott Smith for his spare fourth album, Makers, which he calls a return to his roots: the country and early-60s music he was exposed to as a kid in Texas before moving North as a teen. Makers as in Makers Mark whiskey features the pretty single, White Daisy Passing, sung in the gentle falsetto Spin.com describes as the kind of voice that never-been-kissed teenage girls imagine their crushes might have in a perfect universe: soulful, slightly raspy, but ultimately tuneful and sincere. But Votolato refuses to admit hes a confessional singer-songwriter. The songs I write are based on real life experiences," he says. "But they are not confined by the facts.
